On 1 May 1886, Gustave Eiffel's design for the Eiffel Tower won unanimous approval from the French authorities responsible for organising the Universal Exhibition in Paris to celebrate the centenary of the French Revolution.

Gustave Eiffel signed an agreement with the government, which granted him a twenty-year concession.

But did you know that the Eiffel Tower was not invented by Gustave Eiffel?
