Discovering the bowels of the volcano... the underground world holds surprises that only nature can offer.

Here there is no technical equipment for progression, nor narrow passages on the stomach, but a gentle discovery of the other side of the scene born of the cooling of molten lava flows.

This show provides information about the processes involved in building the volcano and the landscape outside takes on a new meaning. Exploring, a secret dream?

A magical journey through one of the most beautiful lava tunnels in the world. This visit, which is aimed at a wide range of visitors and is accessible to children aged 6 and over, will enable you to discover the most original formations that can be found underground in Réunion: Lava stalactites and stalagmites, perimorphs (negative tree imprints in the walls), frozen lava waterfalls, etc...

As you progress through the galleries, your guide will talk to you about volcanism, the birth of the island, the formation of lava tunnels and many other fascinating things.

Meeting point: Parking de la vierge au Parasol, at Grand-Brulé in Sainte-Rose

What to bring: Sportswear, mask, sports shoes, 1L of water per person, backpack + snack

Detailed description of the outing :

Your guide will welcome you at the Parking de la Vierge au Parasol, in the Enclos du Grand Brûlé, on the N2.

Once the equipment has been distributed, a short walk of about fifteen minutes on the smooth lava flows will lead you to the entrance of the tunnel. This will be an opportunity to discover the natural geological and botanical heritage of the Piton de la Fournaise. And off we go underground!

The first room is vast and allows everyone to acclimatise to this new environment. The exploration will continue by going through the different galleries: frozen waterfalls of chance, the Great Hall, the Gallery of the Stepladder,...

Throughout the progression, we will take the time to observe and explain the different formations.

Finally, after a short tea/coffee break in the Pillar Room, we will take the Stepladder network to the exit.

The progression takes place most of the time standing up. The only "low" part of the route requires you to walk on all fours for about fifteen metres. For the more adventurous, your guide can suggest variations of parallel galleries, more sportive.
