What is a Cannolo?

Cannolo is a pastry that originated in Sicily and is often made in Naples and the surrounding areas.

The Sicilian Cannolo, now known the world over, consists of a patty fried in lard, about fifteen centimetres long and five centimetres in diameter. The inside is filled with a cream made from sweetened sheep's milk ricotta, or even cow's milk ricotta in some regions. To finish off this traditional Sicilian dessert, decorative ingredients are added to the ends of the cannolo, such as candied cherries, orange peel, pistachios or chocolate chips, all covered with a layer of icing sugar.
